AMMAN — The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) in Jordan and Tamweelcom signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Wednesday to empower vulnerable rural communities and accelerate the transformation of sustainable agrifood systems in Jordan.
The signing ceremony marked the beginning of a five-year collaborative effort to bridge the gap between small-scale agricultural producers and the formal financial sector, according to a FAO statement.
This partnership aligns with FAO’s global "Hand-in-Hand" initiative and the "Four Betters"—better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life—ensuring that no one is left behind in Jordan’s development journey.
The agreement seeks to create a more resilient agricultural economy through responsible investment and innovative business strategies.
Under this MoU, FAO and Tamweelcom will work together to facilitate market access for FAO beneficiaries by integrating them into commercial platforms, exhibitions, and regional trade events organised by both the public and private sectors.
The partnership will also provide vital technical and administrative support to improve livelihoods and food security, supported by regular field visits to monitor and evaluate the impact of the assistance provided.
FAO Representative in Jordan Nabil Assaf emphasised that effective change is only possible when efforts are joined across sectors.
He noted that the collaboration with Tamweelcom, a leading microfinance institution, is essential for providing beneficiaries with the guidance and mentorship needed to develop professional business proposals.
This support is designed to improve access to microfinance for agricultural products, home-based businesses, and emerging agri-business startups, he added.
Tamweelcom Chief Executive Officer Basem Khanfar said that the strategic partnership between the two institutions aims to promote social goals.
Khanfar said that this can be achieved through the sustainability of food security in Jordan, striving to achieve the growth of agricultural projects in particular, encouraging them to market their products within bazaars and exhibitions, in addition to providing them with financial knowledge and culture to improve their ability to manage their projects efficiently and effectively.
By combining FAO’s and Tamweelcom’s technical expertise, the agreement sets a new standard for how international organisations and private sector can collaborate to secure a sustainable and food-secure future for Jordan.
